Home (fire) insurance: your home and contents protected

In Belgium, fire insurance is also called home insurance, and for good reason: it covers much more than fire alone. Water damage, storms, broken glass, a loose roof tile that hits the neighbours' car: all situations in which your home insurance pays out.

Three types of cover

Basic cover

Material damage to your home and contents caused by fire, water, storm, natural disasters, glass breakage and electricity.

Additional cover

Extra benefits automatically included in the policy, such as the costs of clearing up or temporary accommodation after a claim.

Optional cover

Cover you choose yourself, such as theft or legal expenses.

Your liability too

Home insurance also covers your civil liability if your building or contents cause damage to others. Think of a leak that seeps through to the flat below yours.

Read the terms

The basic cover looks similar at every insurer, but the emphasis differs. What are the excesses, the limits and the exclusions? We set them side by side for you.

A common misconception: home insurance is not just for owners. As a tenant, it is very much in your interest too.

Frequently asked questions

Is fire insurance mandatory?

For owners it is not a legal requirement, but it is indispensable and usually a condition for a mortgage. Tenants in Flanders, however, are required to insure their liability for fire and water damage.

Can I insure my commercial premises too?

Yes. For shops, hospitality businesses and offices we put together tailored fire insurance, if required with business interruption and operational liability cover.
